Adoration of the Magi

Rajwinder Pal

A respect for the cultures, religions and traditions of the land they had conquered but then made a home gave the Mughals the confidence to be inquisitive about the wider world. Their position as the leading world economy of their age made them a magnet of the world's adventurers, merchants, traders and those on the make for a fortune. This painting by an Indian artist from the Mughal court in the 16th century is testament to that syncretic culture.
