Asian Soldiers - 1st World War

Rajwinder Pal

Quite a good piece in the Evening standard about, among others, two generations of my family who fought over two world wars to defend British freedoms when as subjects of the Empire they didn’t have any themselves. Made me recall an incident during my teens when a racist bloke at work shouted at me, “ I didn’t fight is the war to have work with the likes of you ya fucking wog.” He was older so I somehow restrained my self and merely pushed him. As he lifted himself up from the floor I said” It’s just as well then that my family fought for your right to be racist and abuse me.”

I was a bit reluctant to contribute to this story. But it will be worth it if this and other stories like this help us to respect, acknowledge and accept that contrary to Churchill’s rhetoric about WW2, Britain did not stand alone. This has fed a national myth that needs to be corrected. And the best way to do is to revise the National curriculum to include more inclusive histories.
